Marlboro College announced the launch of three new certificate programs at its Graduate School, located at 28 Vernon Street in downtown Brattleboro, VT. The certificates provide education in the fields of project management, instructional technology and open source web development. Each program is a scaled-down version of the successful master’s degree programs taught by practicing professionals that Marlboro has offered for over 10 years. “Our goal with the certificate programs was to offer education from the same quality faculty at a lower cost and with a shorter time commitment,” says Peter Crowell, acting director of the Marlboro College Graduate School. “We’re taking steps to provide an opportunity for technology professionals and educators to improve their skills as well as their resumes at a time when the economy has everyone watching their expenses.” Over a one year period, classes meet twice a month to accommodate the schedules of working adults, supplemented by an online learning component. Completion of each program accumulates twelve credits that can be applied toward the associated master’s degree program. The Certificate in Project Management teaches employees and managers at both non-profit and for-profit workplaces the skills for managing a project on-time and within budget constraints. The program meets the formal education requirements needed to apply for the Project Management Institute’s PMP exam. The Certificate in Open Source Web Development instructs beginners as well as experienced web developers in the creation of dynamic and cost- effective content management systems using Joomla! open source software. In addition, students learn how to apply web 2.0 marketing techniques like search engine optimization, social networking and viral marketing. The Certificate in Instructional Technology is for professionals who need to effectively integrate technology into learning environments, whether they are K-12 or higher education teachers that want to bring technology into the classroom or employees at organizations that want to develop in-house training programs.
