There are many good version control systems for programmers, but they are oriented toward managing multiple programmers working on a single project, rather than for writers, artists or designers working alone on multiple projects that are not usually plain text source code. They are nearly always server based and can be difficult for non-programmers to set up and work with. I would suggest instead looking at File Hamster from Mogware: http://www.mogware.com/filehamster/ which can be set up to watch selected folders and file types and store renamed copies of the revised files in a library folder every time you save your work. The basic version is free, but it's well worth spending $14.95 more for File Hamster Plus which provides considerably more flexibility and also lets you add a variety of inexpensive and useful plug-ins for reporting, annotating revisions on the fly, automatic zipping and other tasks. It's not quite the same as a version control system, but it's probably a better solution for most creative content producers.
