Ads are likely to generate more revenue than search.

Placement: near the top of each page works pretty good.  Having an ad
unit in one or the other 'sidebars' also works. The search widget should
also be someplace easy to get to.

If you have a really good content the ads can pull in some revenue,
esp. if the content is updated regularly.  If by 'less sticky' you mean
people navigate away from your site more readily, then yes they do.
OTOH, if you have pages that present all that needs to be presented
either on their own or within a couple of 'adjenct' pages, it is good
to provide your vistors 'somewhere to go next', and you might as well
catch a few cents as your visitors move on to something else.
