Hi Dan,

I know you said "desktop" PC, but your friend could get a brand new  
netbook laptop with either Linux, or Windows XP on it. I just saw an  
Acer at NewEgg.com for about $300.
Of course your friend ought make sure a netbook works for his purposes.
