I would also recommend a Sansa device. Ours has lasted 4 years and still
working well.
Things I would recommend:-
1. Memory based device, not disk for reliability.
2. A display is a must (I won an Apple something with no display...it
remains unused)
3. Not Apple or Microsoft, be free to do what YOU want with it.
4. An FM tuner is handy to have.
5. Recording from built in microphone is sweet when you need it.
 
Check newegg.com, Amazon.com and buy.com for online retailers as well as
Staples, Sears and Target for local retailers.
