Just out of curiousity Jaime, have you run a cleaning tape through your machine? Although audio is recorded with picture as a digital component of signal, the overall degradation of signal quality may be more obvious in audio when the heads are getting a little dirty. The encoding for lost picture lines is more rigourous and may "save" picture in ways that are less noticeable (a little sparkle or interpolation of image in lines may escape your attention, but audio drop-out is obviously getting your attention).
