Hi Christian

If you were going to go open source and chose Drupal then there are a
couple of free options you could consider adapting:

We're working the Open Media Project and currently beta testing their
MERCI (Manage Equipment Reservations, Checkout and Inventory) module,
essentially an add on component to Drupal that can be configured for
one's individual purposes:

http://drupal.org/project/merci (but as you'll see it is still very
much in beta)

I believe that Manhattan Neighborhood Network developed a similar
initiative that could also potentially be customized: http://groups.drupal.org/node/13772

Cheers
Craig
