[Hidden-tech] Apple question re: email

You can do the same thing with Thunderbird. Thunderbird "folders" are
plain text files that can be copied for archival storage. Thunderbird
will rebuild an index if it doesn't find the index file in the same
directory as the email "folder" file and also provides for full-text
search through emails, although it is not particularly fast at it.

However, if you have a serious amount of email archived and from which
you need to find and retrieve information, I would recommend askSam, a
free-form database program with exceptional search flexibility that
includes a wizard to import email from both Eudora and Thunderbird. You
can read more about using askSam for email archiving on their website
at: http://www.asksam.com/solutions/email%20archiving.asp

askSam runs under Windows only, but that is not a problem today for Mac
owners with VMware Fusion or Parallels. It is a little pricey at $150
for the Standard edition and $395 for the Pro edition (which adds
full-text indexing for fast searching and a very useful word list), but
it goes on sale for much less every so often -- I bought the Pro edition
for $100 a couple of years ago.
