I've never heard anything like that bad about google calendar either. It certainly does have some layout inflexibilities, but a customer of mine was using it before we moved to exchange, and it had some nice group scheduling features with group overlays that they liked alot. If you don't have an exchange server as an option, there is some sort of free microsoft online that works with outlook, and i'm sure there is some vague licensing option to get more services/features. I'm sorry I forget what its called but PRETTY sure its part of office online, i tried it with office 2007 so not sure if its an option on older versions. Also this is not exactly platform independent and not sure your platform.
