I like HP as a rule, but their Netbook is highly priced as compared with the
others and also doesn't use the new Atom chip from Intel.  Right now Staples
also has the Acer at $350, so you could walk right in and buy one today.

I'm with Maria: at this point there's a point of decreasing returns w/r/t
used laptops. You're going to spend $100 on a hunk of junk and then spend
another $100 getting it up and running with a new battery etc., and at that
point you will be more than halfway to a new laptop. Check out what's
available in the "Netbook" category these days:

I've had good experiences with the eee line and the Acer line; people speak
very highly of the HP as well.
