In my opinion:

Wordpress is by far the most advanced and easy-to-use platform out there.
With the upcoming advancements in the soon-to-be-released version 2.7, and
their incredibly well-designed iPhone app, it's not even worth looking
anywhere else. It can do it all.

If I were you, I would set up a free account on http://wordpress.com/ to
play around with and dip your toes into blogging; if you like what you see
there, it might be worth hiring a local web wizard to set you up with a
self-hosted Wordpress installation on your own domain (although you might be
fine with the free, hosted version!).
