Izzy:
In terms of a platform, WordPress is open source, so that means there
are lots of free templates and a community to help you. It also means
it's free for you to use and fairly straightforward to learn.

Blogger was bought by Google several years ago and they haven't done a
heck of a lot with it. The templates aren't that great, but it's free
and it's integrated with other Google tools if that's important to
you. For instance, you can type a post in Google Docs, get it like you
want it, then publish directly to Blogger.

TypePad is the third major platform. It costs money to subscribe, but
you get decent support for your money plus access to other goodies
like a specialty ad network.

The platform you choose depends on your needs. In terms of how to get
started blogging, I strongly suggest you read this blog post by Bill
Ives at the Portals and KM blog. Bill works with businesses on setting
up blogs and this is a really good overview of the types of things you
should be thinking about before you ever put pen to paper (so to speak).

Also check out Chris Brogan's blog at www.chrisbrogan.com. I've
learned a lot from him about using sub-heads and pictures to dress up
a blog entry and make it more readable.

Good luck.
