I believe you can just do a low-level format of a 1.44 MB 3.5 to 720K.
You can't do the opposite though.
I too have a pile of 720K -- actually formatted to 640K, since that is the
standard thing for OS-9/68000 (no, this is NOT MacOS 9, but something
competely different.
