Marcia -
You can get a region-free dvd player for under $100. See this site:
http://www.world-import.com/dvd.htm

I also remember hearing that any Akai DVD player is region free.

Marcia,

You have more problems than just region code. BBC videos are PAL format, we
in the US are NTSC. It's true you can switch your computer to region 2, but
it will hold only a limited amount of switches. And if your last one happens
to be PAL, you've essentially rendered it unusable for your NTSC DVDs. BTW,
a computer can play both PAL and NTSC. The hack to unlock your computer DVD
player may or may not work.

You can find some set-top players that will PLAY all regions as well as
CONVERT PAL to NTSC. These players are usually players meant for the
international market, not US sales. You can find these on eBay. They go
around $100-175. It might be steep if you just want to play one disc, but if
you are in the market for a new player, you might want to consider one of
these. These players are major brands as well.
