As a general rule, the not-high-end "hobby business" increases during hard times... until the money from unemployment runs out. Folks without a job need something to do. Something I haven't seen is the usual increase of unemployment payments duration. In past recessions I believe that has increased to a year. There are always exceptions in recession, even one where the signature of the recession is a reversal of the truism that housing is always local and almost always goes up. Back in the '81-83 recession, tech had pockets of strength. I started that recession working for an automatic test equipment manufacturer selling large scale capital equipment to manufacturers like the auto makers; they got hit pretty hard. But I switched into video games, which remained in a boom until well after the end of the recession - before that bubble burst! Then, during the bursting of the video game bubble, everyone except a few die-hard companies got out of that business - a few years before the industry matured into an even bigger and more stable one. Locally, I've been surprised to hear from independent trades people - carpenters, plumbers, etc - that they are incredibly busy this fall. I doubt that extends to the new home builders, though the Pioneer Valley in general seems neither to have seen as much of a bubble in home building & prices nor as big a bust now, as many other places. And if getting a parking place in downtown Northampton is any sort of economic indicator, it still seems to me to be stuck close to "maxed out".
