Nice article, Derek. I've done custom PHP email scripts and it really does take a lot of research to get email out these days, including selection of your web host. Not many shared hosts allow sending more than 50 or so emails per hour - a few allow 500 per hour if you ask them. And then there is the problem getting those emails past different hurdles; AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. You'll need cron jobs or some other means of throttling the send rate. Then you'll want a mail filter set up to grab bounces, unless you do that by hand. I'm setting up Joomla! sites that need newsletters, and contemplating where best to set up a reseller hosting account.until I've got enough volume to get a dedicated server. Acajoom, a Joomla! extension, does pretty well for small lists in its free version, though it doesn't automatically handle bounces. You'll need to either do custom programming or buy the commercial versions to handle larger email lists. Also, the default HTML template on Acajoom isn't very good; but you can replace it, and should start from scratch. If anyone cares to share their experiences with reseller accounts, particularly in terms of handling of mailing lists, I'd love hear about that.
