XP Pro wins hands down. First off, XP Pro is the high-end version of XP, whereas Vista Home Basic is the least capable bare-bones entry-level version of Vista. Second, Vista is much slower than XP and far more resource hungry. Randall Kennedy of Computerworld recently ran a whole series of benchmarks on Vista vs. XP on a variety of hardware platforms and for different types of tasks and applications and found that, without exception, XP was faster than Vista, often by a wide margin, even on the highest end hardware that was supposedly designed for Vista. Finally, nearly two years after its release, there are still many applications that will run under XP but not under Vista, and almost none where the converse is true.
