Hey all,

Just jumped onto this thread, so maybe this has been covered already...

I use MS Office 2004. Got worried some when those .docx docs started coming
through. Then found a free download from MS to convert 'em to readable in
Office 2004. Quick and easy, works fine, no need to save down OR buy new
software... so far. (Clients can download it, too.) I've used it only for Word docs, so
can't speak to any other Office apps.

It's called "Open XML File Format Converter for Mac."

Here's MS's "official info" and a link to download it:

The Open XML Converter allows you to convert files that were created in
Office 2008 for Mac or Office 2007 for Windows so that you can open, edit, and save
them in earlier versions of Office for Mac. The Open XML Converter can
convert Word documents, Excel workbooks, and PowerPoint presentations that are in
the Open XML Format so that you can open and edit the files in Office 2004
version 11.4 or later and Office v. X version 10.1.9 or later. You can choose to
convert and open one file, or convert a large number of files.
The Open XML Converter uses two methods to convert your XML-based files,
depending on which version of Office for Mac you have installed. Each conversion
method requires that you have the Open XML Converter installed.
     • If you are using Office 2004 version 11.4 or Office v. X version
10.1.9 or later, you can convert XML-based files by using the Open XML
Converter, and then open, edit, and save the converted files in any file format that
is compatible with your application.
     • If you have Office 2004 version 11.5, the Open XML Converter runs
in the background so that you can use Office 2004 for Mac to open, edit, and
save files that use the Open XML Formats. You can also create new files that
use the Open XML Formats.
Note You can download the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac from the
Downloads area on the Microsoft Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download).
