Hi,

Sorry for joining the discussion late but wanted to add my two cents...

Having your logo designed is an opportunity to capture the essence of your
business graphically.  So give some thought to values, mission, who you are
trying to appeal to (target market), and what differentiates your business
from competitors.  Pick a designer that you feel can translate these
elements into a logo.

I do think that the price points Cynthia mentioned are unrealistic.
Typically at a minimum a designer will do several initial designs, get your
reactions, come back with a couple more definitive versions, then finalize
after discussion on the details.
