Hi Cynthia,
In my experience $500 for a logo is reasonable, if not low. At an
average of $50 an hour, this accounts for ten hours of work, which, when
the time to sketch concepts, run through revisions, and create the final
artwork is considered isn't that much. Likewise, with a business card,
&150 = 3 hours of work, again not much.

You may be able to find these services provided by someone more cheaply,
such as a student or a designer doing projects like this in his off
hours from another job. But for professional work, I'd say this is a
good deal.

Another option, would be to utilize an online design service like
LogoWorks http://www.logoworks.com/ or the Logo Loft
http://www.thelogoloft.com/. I've been on a few projects that have used
these services, and while I myself haven't seen anything spectacular
come out of them, you may have better luck.
