I believe you install the entire "guest" operating system.
I have been using VMware Fusion for about a day now to run Windows
Vista. It's working pretty well on my MBP 2.33 with 2GB Ram, 250 GB
HD. The guest OS will need its own disk space. VMware Fusion has a
"Unity" mode which will allow you to have the guest OS's applications
act like the host OS's applications. For example I have an IE7 Icon on
my Dock that I click on when I need to hack my web application to work
with this ridiculous piece of garbage web browser (sorry, ranting).
Anyway, with VMWare Fusion (and perhaps Parallels) I may have the
appearance of running Windows applications inside of OS X but I still
need to have Windows installed on the virtual machine.
