Also you bring up a point about customer access to details: Giving clients access and verification to logged hours is why I like web enabled, role based apps (i prefer open source but msproject server works too) so that you can give your customers a security enabled (they only see their own projects) login to their project info. recently I came across this windows program that is standalone windows based , but open source and looks great (haven't tried it though). http://www.openworkbench.org/ I like how some applications (as mentioned already) have a timeclock you scan start and stop.
