Was it Thunderbird 2? If not I'm wondering if the problems were solved in a later version than the one you had tried. I agree that Mac Mail search is not the best. Depending on the situation sometimes I use spotlight instead but there are definitely downsides to that approach. It sounds like you are not encountering the conflict between your email host and Mac Mail -- which host are you using?
