I lived in Upper Nyack for a while, way
back when. Lovely place. The BEST thunderstorms, eh?

A while back I had the same issue and
had the luxury of researching solutions for an
article I then sold. (Sometimes I miss freelancing)

Here are the keys (pun intended, of course) I learned...

First ... you have to keep the keyboard
low enough so that you are not holding your arms
up... elbows should be relaxed... forearms no higher than your elbows.

Second... Tilt the keyboard down away
from you. When the keyboard is tilted up in the
back in makes your wrist bend back and pretty
much guarantees carpal tunnel inflammation. The
idea is for your hands to fall naturally DOWN on
the keyboard in a relaxed position that require
no effort to maintain. You may need to install a
high end keyboard drawer under the edge of your
desktop (the furniture, not the one on the
monitor) to get the keyboard low and tilted properly.

Third is the keyboard. The best I've
found is an anti RSI (repetitive stress injury)
keyboard that is stocked by www.CyberGuys.com (
it's cheap too... about $8, I think?) It is flat
and shaped like a regular keyboard but the keys
are keystoned to allow your hands to be in proper
position, not twisted as with a normal keyboard.
It's the same idea as the weird bent keyboards in
terms of key placement, but without the split
keyboard and hilly shape. It also has a fairly light 'touch.'

The reason a laptop feels better is that
the keys don't take much effort to push and have
a short 'throw'... the distance they move. You
can also position a laptop easily so that it is
tilted down away from you, which relieves the stress on your wrists.

         Hope that's helpful.
         Many blessings,
         David
