Many small animals are 'bothered' by untrasonic sounds and will 'depart' an area where they are prevelant (usually because of some random human activity). I've seen devices advertized in mail order catalogs that emit untrasonic sound that are intented to run off various small animals from time to time. Note such devices may also bother your pets (dogs, cats, rodents).
