Bruce,

Old School Capital is a financial planning firm. We generally work with
four types of clients: i) business owners, ii) corporate executives, iii)
mid-career professionals and iv) retirees. I'm not sure if that is "fancy"
or not.

Just a point about compensation, which is laced in your comment. There are
generically three types of compensation formats: Commission-Only (typically
insurance-based and brokerage-based providers); Fee-Only (paid only by the
client and refusing any form of direct or indirect payment by the
"manufacturers" of financial products) and Fee-Based (compensated by either
sales commissions or by client fees, and often both).

My firm is strictly a Fee-Only operation, which observes the Fiduciary Code
as promulgated by NAPFA. I hold the Personal Financial Specialist
designation, which is awarded by the American Institute of Certified Public
Accountants and have been in the financial services industry for twenty-five
years.

With best regards,

Steve Caron

Subject: [Hidden-tech] Financial Planner

Hello all,

I have a friend who is looking for a financial planner in the valley
(ideally near Amherst (or in the Worcester area)) who can help her with some
retirement planning. She is a social worker and does not have tons of money
so she needs someone who is not too expensive. She does not need someone
"fancy" because she does not have the kinds of complex issues that people
with more money tend to run into. I'd like to avoid sending her to someone
who also offers investment services and the like because she needs to be
sure she is getting advice that is not biased towards some service or
investment the person is trying to sell. I realize this will mean paying the
person up front.

She is distinctly left-leaning in her politics so someone who can understand
that perspective would be good!

Many thanks,
Bruce Hooke
