Hi Anne,

Happy New Year!
You'd need to prove to the existing hosting provider that your client  
does in fact own the domain in question -- probably in writing with  
identification/notarization, depending upon their policies. They will  
then provide you with all the server access info you need.
Unfortunately, that "deceased webmaster" story will become more and  
more common as more and more of us dotcom boomers edge up the age  
scale... the epitaph of the tech age: "Beloved Webmaster"

You can do a whois search to find out the domain hosting info...
