All, Be damn carefull when dumping that old tube TV. (or monitor) Picture tubes contain a high vacuum. If they receive an impact they can implode. The implosion can be so severe that it looks like an explosion. Glass can fly everywhere. Normally the face is protected with a plastic shield that also, for color tubes, reduces X-ray radiation. The dangerous part of the tube is generally the part inside of the TV box. Jim Ussailis jim at nationalwireless.com PS Old picture tubes can also retain a high voltage charge, because the tube itself is also a capacitor for the power supply. Generally the 25 KV jolt from one of these isn't lethal, but it is not enjoyable. TV repairmen know enough to discharge the tube whenever they work on or near it. Alternatively in Amherst at Wildwood Elementary School per the Wildwood Wire e-newsletter: "Wildwood Electronics Recycling Day - Saturday 4/28 10 to Noon The Wildwood Elementary School PTO is sponsoring a recycling event that will keep electronic items that contain toxic chemicals (TVs, computers) out of the landfill and raise money for Wildwood school. The event will occur on Saturday 4/28/07, from 10:00AM to Noon in the Wildwood School parking lot on. Local residents and business are encouraged to participate as the disposal fees that are being charged by the Wildwood PTO are the same OR LESS than what residents would pay to dispose these items at the Amherst landfill. Two local computer firms, Valley ComputerWorks (http://www.valleycomputerworks.com) and Tech Cavalry (http://www.techcavalry.com) will be participating by recycling their unwanted computers at this event. This is the initial year for a planned, annual event that will enhance local environmental stewardship through creative solutions based on partnerships between public and private entities. There should be some good photo opportunities of families transporting and unloading items for recycling on that day. Some come on down and dump that old tube TV!"
