I don't have hands on experience, but since I mostly use WinXP and
occasionally a Mac (G4), I have been investigating this issue with the
idea of possibly going that route.

There are numerous reviews on the web (you can Google to find them) of
WinXP running on Intel Macs, and it works quite well, as is confirmed by
my nephew, who runs both WinXP and Linux on his MacBook Pro.

There are currently two ways to go: You can use Apple's BootCamp and
boot either into OS-X or WinXP, which gives the best performance, but
does not allow you to go from one to another without rebooting, or you
can use Parallels for Mac, a virtual machine that lets you run WinXP in
an OS-X window. Parallels is new and supposedly has some rough spots.

VMware, the leading virtualization software company for Intel platforms
is currently beta testing VMware Workstation for Mac OS-X. I use VMware
Workstation extensively on PCs and expect Workstation for Mac OS-X to be
the way to go when it comes out, probably by the end of the year.

That said, I personally do not intend to buy an Intel Mac until they
start using Intel Core 2 chips in them, which should be in early 2007.
The reason is that the Core 2 chips provide hardware virtualization
support which means that running a virtual WinXP machine in an OS-X
window will be much more efficient than with software virtualization.
