I use a 160 GB external hard drive for this, and I use Windows XP's backup
utility. I don't know how it works, it does not make an identical copy of
your HD, it makes what I call a "dehydrated" version. If you have unlimited
backup space it would be preferable to make an identical copy of all your
data.
I do know, however, that it works. I had a major system crash last month
and was able to restore my data just fine.

Hey folks,
I'm a good backer-upper, but am hampered by the fact that I'm only using
DVDs, which won't hold all of my data much less an image of my hard
drive. I want to get an external backup/storage device that I can use
for image backups of my hard drive as well as backups of selected data
(incremental type things). I'm looking for recommendations of solutions
that people have:
- actually used to back up in the described manner, and
- actually used to restore something, ideally a trashed hard drive.
I'm also interested in opinions on flash drives, especially 1 gb size.
Anyone got a brand to recommend, or comments on flash drive storage in
general?
