[Hidden-tech] .VxD question

If the VxD stack overflow message has gone away, don't worry about it. However, do worry about the whole picture. You need to check your hard disk drive for errors. To do that, open the My Computer window, right click on your hard disk drive, and find the "Check disk for errors" command. You may have to click on Properties to find it, or Tools. Sorry, I don't remember the Windows 98 arrangement offhand. When you find the tool, check the box that says find and fix bad blocks, too. Run the tool twice, though the second time don't select the fix bad blocks option.

After you've done that, continue looking for the lost file. Have you used the Find tool from the Start menu? Choose to search local hard disks, then specify a part of the file name. If your original file was named foo.doc, search for foo. If you don't find it, I'd say it's gone. There are ways to look deeper but you probably don't want to go there ($ or a very techno-savvy friend), and you still might not get it back.

To avoid future problems, take a look at how much free space you have left on your local hard disk drive. You can right click on the drives in the My Computer window and choose Properties. You should maintain at least 10% free space on each drive to avoid trouble. If it's less you probably want another or a bigger disk drive, kind of a pain. You might get away with cleaning up and maybe compressing the files on your drives. Check out those right-click menus again.

 .hi all

a few days ago, my thirteen-year-old managed to lose an entire wordperfect
file that he had been working on for months. He was working on a computer
unning windows 98

I tries alll sorts of things to find it, including some Norton utility
program that actually has found NOTHING , including files that are happliy
filed in wordperfect.

Anyway, after several fruitless searches, I turned off the computer, and
the next time I rebooted, the following message came up:

"Terminating thread due to a stack overflow problem. A VxD, possibly
recently installed, has consumed too much stack space. Increase the setting
of 'minSPs' in System.INI or remove recently installed VxD's. There are
currently 5 SPs allocated.

                    Press any key to continue"

Does anyone know what it means and if it is significant? I did press
another key, at which point the regular desktop appeared, and I have turned
the computer on and off a few times since then with no problems, but I have
not gone into wordperfect.

...and secondarily, does anyone have any other ideas of how to find the
file? we still have a backup file that dates back to nov 6th, but he worked
on in more recentlyu than that, and I had re-saved it on december 27th, the
day that he managed to lose it.

thanks, stephanie
