There's an open-source script at http://www.phpbuddy.com/article.php?id=23 that should enable at least the login aspect of what you're trying to do. All you do is include it in the top your PHP file... it looks for a session; if none exists it prompts for a username/password. If a session exists (meaning the user has already logged in within a certain amount of time) then it allows unrestricted access to the files.
