It's my experience that clients are loathe to go this direction until you're proven that you are pretty much indispensable. I was hoping for a retainer from a major NJ company who is quite dependent on me at this stage, but the best I could get was a six-month contract with a very decent purchase order and contract that listed a payment schedule. Although I would have preferred the alternative, it's not always a direction corporations want to go.
