[Hidden-tech] Music downloads

I'm glad to see people raising the royalties issue, too!

if you think about it, a "download" is very similar to buying a 45rpm single back in Olden Times....

the last time that 45 rpm records were available, sometime in the mid 1980's,they cost somewhere between 79 cents and a little over a dollar, depending on where you bought them.

Independent band 45's, at that time, cost more because they had to be "imported"--sometimes from England, sometimes from far away places like Minnesota ;-) but because they were limited press, and possibly more "collectable" they were more expensive.

So, I really don't understand why it's such a big hairy canary to pay 99cents for a download that, like a 45, you'll probably have forever (and with better audio quality)

I know when I was a kid, I paid for all my 45s and LPs with my own allowance. And if I shot my allowance on records, that was my problem. So, David, if your daughter wants to use all her money on downloading, then that really is her choice. She'll probably learn more about how to budget her money (as I did) after she's blown it totally on music and *then* decided she also wanted some lip gloss that she then can't afford.

It's all a learning process. And not a bad one, really.

BTW, I still have every single 45 I ever bought. Well over 100. and every LP. Well over 200. Wouldn't trade them for the world. The memories are too precious even if the vinyl itself isn't all that valuabe. :-)

thank you !
i was wondering if anyone would mention the legal point.

emusic.com is cool, the variety is somewhat odd (bill evans, elliot
smith and the cult for example, but no neil young) but they have the
best pricing around for legal mp3 downloading, while supporting artists.
they have a few legal free mp3's for download too. it's even affordable
enough for a teenager. there are TONS of places like myspace and
funender.com and soundclick.com where less famous great (and everything
from bad to ok to really bad) musicians have free, legal music.
