Also keep in mind that this too shall pass. Older kids go through stages 
just like when they were little. The kid who is arguing or pushing on 
every issue now, could be the cooperative compliant child you remember 
in 6 months. Try not to get too worked up about short-term behavioral 
issues.

You should definitely be paying close attention to what's going in your 
child's life, and keeping the lines of communication open to whatever 
extent possible.

Honestly, I've found that books rarely offer any useful real-world 
advice beyond the Gessel Institute books, which provide a developmental 
baseline and let you know that what your child is doing is really normal 
(even if it's not pleasant). By the way, their advice is hardly ever 
very good, but their studies of development are very helpful.
