If someone else is doing something similar (and in the same category) with a name that is similar to yours, you may be denied the registration. Start by doing basic web searches through Google, etc. and check some of the free registered names databases that are available online. The cost comes when you need to do a better search for names that are similar - possibly similar enough to cause confusion. There are search services which can pull up these kinds of possible conflicts and then you need to go over them with your lawyer to determine if any are possible problems. You will also need to carefully pick which categories you register for and the more categories you choose the more the cost and the more likely the chance of hitting a conflicting name. I've got an application from the US Gov't website http://www.uspto.gov/index.html and have read all the instructions, etc. It looks do-able but I wonder if it is recommended to have a lawyer do this. I want to register the name and logo of the company (see below) as well as the name of some software products that we will put on the market. Any comments are very welcome and appreciated.
