Request for Services

Hampshire HealthConnect

Purpose

Hampshire HealthConnect (HHC), established in July 2000, is a community-based, not-for-profit health care access organization. HHC's mission is to help low-income, uninsured, and underinsured residents of Hampshire County and surrounding areas access health coverage and health care services. The scope of services includes: organizing the fundraising dinners in the spring, expanding the pool of potential attendees, and follow-up with donors regarding future giving.

Background

In collaboration with Cooley Dickinson Hospital, HHC has been offering program services to people who are low-income and uninsured since March of 2002. The program has helped more than 5,000 local residents access a wide range of available medical and related services, including health insurance coverage, reduced cost medical care, dental, mental health, and prescription assistance programs. Our services include screening for eligibility for state and local health insurance and health care programs, assistance in completing applications, explanation of how to use program services, and case management as needed to ensure access to care. HHC also administers a volunteer physician network. As is true for most small, nonprofit organizations, obtaining sufficient funding for ongoing operational costs to administer programs is a constant challenge, particularly when programs are offered at no cost to participants.

In 2005, the fundraising subcommittee of the Board of Directors worked with a consultant to develop a plan to create a stable funding base for the future. This is critical to build the capacity of the organization to continue to serve its clientele and adapt to changing economic conditions and health insurance policy in the county and state. The resultant document, Hampshire HeathConnect Fund Development Plan, outlines activities for three years beginning in fall 2005.

Consultant Fundraising Activities

HHC is looking for an individual to carry out some fundraising and development activities. HHC's objective is to deepen its relationship with current annual givers and to establish relationships with new donors. The work will be focused primarily on an annual fundraising event. For the last three years HHC has put on a fundraising dinner; the event would be a continuation of this annual dinner.

The Board hopes to raise approximately $10,000 net at the event. In the past three years we have raised about $7000 each year through two dinners held on consecutive evenings.

The work includes coordination with the HHC Board to arrange a dinner sponsorship, date and logistics; expansion and management of the guest list; mailing invitations; arranging speakers and a follow-up thank you letter.

Responsibilities for the position also include identifying and cultivating major donors during the time leading up to the event and the development of an annual appeal letter. HHC would like to establish a relationship with several long-term "major" donors.

The position will report to the Board of Directors and work with the fundraising committee of the Board, but will have direct contact with one specific member of the board in order to facilitate board involvement and general communication.

The independent contractor position is available immediately and will run for approximately six months. The person is expected to work an average of 5-10 hours per week for the duration of the six month period. The time commitment will likely be higher in the weeks leading up to and immediately following the event. Compensation is $40 per hour, payable monthly upon invoice. The total budget for the project is $5,000 (125 total hours).

Applicants are expected to have a track record of relevant experience with non-profit organization.
