[Hidden-tech] Old Computer

Working computers can be donated to World Computer Exchange and either
mailed to or dropped off at one of their drop-off locations worldwide. The
closest ones are downtown Boston and Hartford. Windows machines must be PII
or better and Macs must be PowerMacs, 120Mhz or faster, G3s preferred. I¹ve
been working with WCE for several years and am the Programme Office for
Zambia. I¹ve been working closely with New Vison for Africa which has
already received 860 computers (two cargo containers) that are now being
placed in Zambia¹s schools.

For more information see:

http://www.worldcomputerexchange.org and click on To Donate.

If your computer does not meet WCE¹s qualifications, it¹s probably too
old/slow for most organizations to accept. Most towns will dispose of it
properly (heavy metals including lead, cadmium, etc.) for a $3-10 fee (same
goes for televisions, etc). Most towns actually contract with the UMass
Computer Recycling Center which carefully disassembles the machines and
recovers as much as they can. Do not put it in your trash can; it either
won¹t be accepted or it will increase contamination at the landfill.
