Thank you to the many HT members who offered their help. I was able to recover the files myself, by removing the broken processor card (which I had previously thought impossible to do without breaking the mother board) and replacing it with the original Apple processor card. The computer now works fine, though at its original (slower) speed. Another good reminder why regular backups are important!
